The
People's Story Museum
163 Canongate
Royal Mile
0131 529 4057
The Canongate Tolbooth has been through many changes since it was originally
built in 1591. It has been a civic building, police station, fire station
and legal dispensary as well as being latterly used for dances and receptions.
In 1954 it became a city museum and The People's Story opened here in
1989, recounting the history and culture of Edinburgh's ordinary inhabitants
of the past 200 years. Using a tradition of oral history and reminiscence,
the life, work and leisure habits of Edinburgh's people are remarkably
brought to life.
