Nelson Monument

Calton Hill
0131 556 2716

To commemorate the victory and death of Admiral Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar, this monument, designed by Robert Burn and based on an upturned telescope, was built from 1807 to 1815. In 1852, a time ball, which lowers each day as the one o'clock gun fires, was added. Climbing the 143 steps allows some tremendous views out over the Forth to Fife, with the Rail and Road Bridges visible as well as the Moorfoot Hills to the south..
