The
National Monument
Calton Hill
Designed by William Playfair and C R Cockerell to commemorate those who
died in the Napoleonic Wars, the common story is that the National Monument
was conceived as a full-scale replica of the Parthenon. It was to be funded
by local Edinburgh merchants, but money ran out and only a fragment was
ever actually built. The small portion that still stands today became
popularly known as "Edinburgh's Disgrace".
However, the original architectural drawings only show the portion that
currently stands, which some believe suggests that this was all that was
ever inteded to be built.
