Underneath the City Chambers is what remains of Mary King's Close. This tour, with your very own period "wench" as a guide, takes you up and down a few closes, with stories of life in the 16th century, what it was like to live through the plague, and an atmospheric little taped ghost story. Highlights include a peek into the last occupied house in the close (although structural insecurity and poisonous wallpaper (!) prevent you from being allowed in), and a room dedicated to the ghost of a little girl, who has been reported in this area time and again. Now, take this as you will, but standing looking at a shrine of toys and gifts, underground in a cramped little room, I definitely felt a charge in the atmosphere…
