GEORGE STREET

The other major shopping street in the area is George Street, which has a different ethos entirely. Not the high street retailers, but mostly the more exclusive, upmarket shops live here. Jewellers, ladies' fashion and gentlemen's attire are all to be found here.

To begin with, let's cover the ladies' shops, since they are definitely the dominant species here:

Firstly there's:

French Connection
68 George Street
0131 220 1276

There's always an exception to the rule, isn't there? This is the only "High Street" retailer here, which is fine because it's really trying to position itself upmarket anyway.

Other than FCUK, there's a plethora of ladies' outlets, many of the type where the gents can have a comfy seat and a cup of coffee while their good lady wives try to max the credit card:

Coast
61 George Street
0131 225 9190

Have to give these guys a special mention as my wife bought a fantastic lilac suit here, and I have indeed experienced their comfy seats.

Escada
35a George Street
0131 225 9885

Hobbs
47 George Street
0131 220 5386

Jigsaw
49 George Street
0131 225 4501

Karen Millen
53 George Street
0131 220 1589

Phase Eight
47b George Street
0131 226 4009

Viyella
34 George Street
0131 225 4652

The Cashmere Store
67 George Street
0131 226 4861

This store has a particular speciality - the clue is in the name!

Then there's "something for the gentleman", with a few men's stores selling suits etc, and a few of them offering their own tailoring services too:

Austin Reed
39/41 George Street
0131 225 6703

Crombie
63 George Street
0131 226 1612

Cruise
80 & 94 George Street
0131 226 3524

The big shop at 80 is a big jeans outlet, while the 94 shop has more dressy attire.

Murphy & Nye
80a George Street
0131 225 8886

This new addition to the street and the city has imported an Italian range of fashion inspired by sailing, as well as professional standard gear for bobbing along on the waves.

George Street also caters to the ladies' other needs with a number of jewellers. The big boys are:

Hamilton & Inches
87 George Street
0131 225 4898

Very upmarket, with antique jewellery, watches and even some original silver statues by celebrated artists among the wares on offer.

Lime Blue Diamond Store
107 George Street
0131 220 2164

Lime Blue is almost a gallery, making browsing for that diamond necklace quite an experience.

Mappin & Webb
88 George Street
0131 225 5502
A more familiar type of jewellers.

And, just to be complete, there are a few apothecaries/perfumeries…

Jo Malone
93 George Street
0131 478 8555

Penhaligon's
33 George Street
0131 220 3210

These guys must be good - my mum has worked in perfumery and aromatherapy for years and she absolutely loves this place

Space NK
97-103 George Street
0131 225 6371

At the end of all that, there is a shop that can find you relief from a day's heavy retail therapy:

The Pier
104 George Street
0131 226 3415

Mostly sells furniture and such downstairs, but also has the most amazing range of scented candles. Our living room has permanently smelt of one of them since we discovered this place and they are wonderful.
