The first pub you come across as you head east down from the Castle. If you're looking for a pub with a quiet and relaxing environment away from the madness of the Grassmarket, then Ensign Ewart is for you. Set in an old stone bulilding, this is a traditional bar with Scottish ales and malts being served and occassionally a folk musician playing away. And in case you don't already know, Ensign Ewart was the heroic young soldier who captured the French flag at the Battle of Waterloo.
