In the 1680's, James VII took over Holyrood Abbey as a chapel for his
knights, the Order of the Thistle. The congregation moved up the road
to the Canongate Kirk. Nowadays, it is the official Parish Church of the
Canongate as well as the Kirk of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle. You'll
find the Queen's own reserved pew down at the front, marked with a crown.
The graveyard here holds some noteworthy bodies, including economist Adam
Smith, poet Robert Ferguson and David Rizzio, the murdered secretary of
Mary Queen of Scots. In 2000, the Canongate Normandy Embroideries were
completed after six years' work, to commemorate the Normandy veterans.
They are on display in the apse. A recent addition is a new Danish Frobenius
Organ, with tracker action, which I am assured is fascinating for organ
enthusiasts.
