Arthur's
Seat
Holyrood Park
Arthur's Seat is the peak of this amazing set of volcanic hills, which
are said to resemble the form of a crouching lion. The volcano would originally
have erupted underwater in the Carboniferous period, largely forming the
landscape for many miles around. It has been dormant for about 335 million
years. On the north side are St. Margaret's Loch and the ruins of St.
Anthony's Chapel, and up in the midst of the peaks is Dunsapie Loch. To
the western edge are the impressive Salisbury Crags and at the southwestern
foot is the sprawling Duddingston Loch.
Entrances to the park by road at Meadowbank, Holyrood Road, Dalkeith Road
and Duddingston
Open all times, but through roads
closed during daylight hours most Sundays.
